    QR Is Not a Maths Test

    People who are good at maths routinely underperform in Quantitative Reasoning, which tells you most of what you need to know about the section.

    The maths rarely goes beyond percentages, ratios, rates and substituting into a supplied formula. Nothing in 36 questions requires anything you did not meet by Year 10.

    What makes it hard is everything wrapped around the arithmetic.

    Where your time actually goes

    Time a slow QR question and you will find the calculation was the quick part. The time went to:

    • **Finding the data.** Tables are deliberately cluttered, with more than you need, similar labels, and units that change between columns.
    • **Working out what is being asked.** Percentage change or percentage of? Per unit or total? Which year is the baseline?
    • **The calculator.** It is slower than a physical one, and every switch between mouse and keypad costs seconds you never get back.

    Improvement comes from attacking those three. Getting better at arithmetic is not the lever.

    Stop reaching for the calculator

    The largest single gain available to most students is doing more in their head.

    Worth being fluent in: ten per cent of anything and multiples of it, repeated doubling and halving, common fractions as percentages, and rough division to one or two significant figures.

    The point is not to abandon the calculator. It is to skip it for the many questions where an estimate identifies the answer outright. If the options are 12%, 34%, 47% and 81%, you do not need precision — you need to know roughly where it lands. QR options are often spread widely enough that a rough figure eliminates three of them.

    Read the question before the table

    Same inversion that works in Verbal Reasoning. Reading a complex table before you know what you need means processing information you will never use.

    Question first. Identify exactly which figures you need. Then go and get only those.

    Check the units every single time

    A large share of QR errors are not calculation errors. They are units: thousands read as units, a rate read as a total, a percentage of the wrong base, a figure taken from the column next door.

    Half a second checking the row, column and units before you calculate feels slow and saves far more than it costs — because a units error is only ever discovered after you have done the entire calculation.

    The shapes that keep coming back

    • **Percentage change.** The near-universal error is dividing by the wrong baseline. Change is always relative to the original.
    • **Reverse percentages.** Given the value after an increase, find the original. Requires dividing, not subtracting a percentage. Catches people out under pressure.
    • **Ratios and proportion.** Splitting quantities, scaling, unit conversion.
    • **Rates.** Speed, cost per unit, consumption. Usually a division where the units tell you which way up.
    • **Formula substitution.** Supplied formula, plug in. Quick marks — take them.
    • **Multi-step extraction.** Three figures from three parts of a table, combined. These are your time sinks and your best abandonment candidates.

    First pass, second pass

    Every question is worth the same. There is no penalty for guessing. A four-step question spanning three tables pays exactly what a one-step percentage pays.

    Take the quick marks first, flag the heavy ones, come back. Students who work strictly in order routinely leave accessible marks unanswered while grinding through something enormous.

    Reviewing properly

    Hundreds of questions without review just builds speed at your existing method, flaws included.

    Classify every error: data location, units, wrong operation, or timing. Almost everyone has one dominant category, and fixing that one beats another hundred questions.

    Track time per question as well as accuracy. A question you got right in ninety seconds is still a problem, even though your score does not show it.
