I was tutored by Daniel from Prep4MedDent and he was extremely helpful with all of my interview prep. It was unclear what interviewers were looking for and having that guidance from Daniel helped to really shape my responses and I ended up receiving multiple offers for med.

1st Year Medicine, University of Tasmania

"Hey I'm Ryan, a first year medical student at the University of Tasmania. I grew up in a small country town 3 and a half hours from Sydney which first exposed me to the disadvantages that rural communities face in terms of healthcare."

"In the 2025/2026 admissions cycle I applied to and interviewed at UTAS, UNDF, JCU and the La Trobe/UniMelb JMP. Having a deep understanding of each university's program (especially rural clinical opportunities) ensured I felt and sounded confident — which ultimately meant I was able to convert 3/4 interviews into offers."

    Common questions

When are medical school interviews held in Australia?

For undergraduate entry, invitations generally go out from mid-to-late October and interviews run from November through to mid-January, depending on the university and the round. Graduate-entry programs selecting on GAMSAT interview much earlier, usually around September — the two calendars are frequently confused. International applicants run on a different schedule again; UNSW, for example, interviews international applicants monthly from June through January.

What is the difference between an MMI and a panel interview?

An MMI is a circuit of short, independent stations, each with a new assessor and an unrelated scenario, scored separately and aggregated. A panel is one continuous conversation with two or more interviewers who can follow up on what you say. MMIs reward consistency, timing discipline and structure; panels reward depth and the ability to be challenged without becoming defensive. Most Australian medical schools use an MMI, but several notable programs use a panel.

How long should I prepare for a medical school interview?

Most of the work is assembling material rather than rehearsing answers: four or five genuine experiences you can describe with specific detail, a considered answer to why medicine, and a reasoning structure for ethical scenarios. That takes weeks of reflection rather than days of cramming. Because the gap between an invitation and the interview date is often short — sometimes a week — the applicants who do best start before they hold an offer.

Do all Australian medical schools interview applicants?

No. Some programs select without an interview and decide on academic results and admissions test performance alone. The table on this page sets out the current format for each university we cover, including those that do not interview.

Are medical interviews online or in person?

It varies by university and has changed repeatedly in recent cycles. Some run in-person circuits on campus, some run online via Zoom or Teams, and some run in person for domestic applicants and online for international ones. Check the university's own admissions page for your year — an online interview needs different preparation, particularly around setup, eye contact and managing a camera.
