Your UCAT Total Means Less Than You Think

    August 2, 20266 min read

Two students get 2600. One is competitive at their first preference. The other is not competitive anywhere on their list.

Nothing is wrong with the scoring. They applied to different universities.

    Scaled, not marked

Each cognitive section is reported from 300 to 900. That figure comes from your raw marks but is not proportional to them.

Scaling exists because different sittings are not identically difficult, and it adjusts so a score means the same regardless of which day you sat. The consequence is that the relationship between raw marks and scaled score is not linear — near the top, extra raw marks buy smaller scaled gains, because the distinctions between very strong candidates get finer.

Practical upshot: grinding for the last two raw marks in a section you are already good at is usually a worse use of your remaining weeks than fixing the section you are bad at. The scale rewards the second far more.

SJT is reported separately, in bands.

    Percentile beats total

Your total only means something relative to the people who sat in the same year. The same number can be a different percentile from one cycle to the next, because cohorts shift.

Universities are working down a ranked list. Where you sit in that ranking is what matters, not the absolute figure — which is why comparing your total against a cutoff from two years ago can mislead you badly in either direction.

Treat published historical cutoffs as a rough indication of competitiveness, not a target line.

This is the part that changes your application

Different schools use the UCAT differently, and most applicants find this out too late to act on it.

Some use the straight total of the three cognitive sections. Some weight particular sections more heavily. Some apply a threshold to SJT. Some combine UCAT with ATAR in a fixed ratio, and the ratio differs between schools.

So a student with a very strong Verbal Reasoning score and an unremarkable total can be far more competitive at a school weighting VR heavily than their total suggests — and far less competitive at a school using a flat total.

Because weightings are set per university and change between years, the only safe move is checking the current criteria for each school, for your year and your applicant category. Our university pages set out how each school approaches selection and we keep them current, but confirm against the university's own admissions page before you finalise preferences.

Three questions worth more than your total

Is my profile even or spiky? An even profile travels well across schools. A spiky one is strong at schools weighting your strong section and weak elsewhere — which should narrow your preference list rather than being read as bad news.

Where does my SJT band sit? If any target school uses it as a threshold, this can matter more than a modest difference in total.

How does this pair with my academic position? For most schools they are combined. A strong UCAT with an ATAR below requirement opens nothing, and the reverse is equally true. Assess the pair.

What it does not tell you

Nothing about whether you will be a good doctor. It is a filter designed to rank a large pool on a narrow set of aptitudes, and it makes no claim past that.

It also does not close doors permanently. People sit it in more than one cycle, and graduate-entry pathways exist that do not use it at all. A disappointing result narrows this year. It does not settle the question.

What to actually do with the number

Apply it honestly to your preference list. Check each school's current weighting, work out where your specific profile is strongest, and be realistic about which applications are genuinely competitive and which are aspirational.

Every year, applicants burn preferences on schools whose selection method does not suit their profile while overlooking schools where they would have been competitive. Working through that properly is worth more than any amount of hoping the cutoffs fall.
