    Program Overview

    About the Program

The Joint Medical Program (JMP) is a partnership between the University of Newcastle and the University of New England, offering 110 places at Newcastle and 60 at Armidale. It follows a problem-based learning curriculum over 5 years.

The JMP's selection process is unique: both UCAT and ATAR serve purely as thresholds. Once you meet both, your interview performance is the only factor determining whether you receive an offer. This makes the JMP interview one of the most high-stakes in Australia.

Approximately 48 of the 170 places are bonded medical places.

    Key Insight: Interview Is Everything

Once you meet both the ATAR and UCAT thresholds, neither score contributes to your ranking. A metro applicant with a 94.3 ATAR and 98th% UCAT is ranked equally to one with 99.95 and 99th% — final offers are determined entirely by MMI interview performance.

    The Newcastle/JMP Medicine Interview

    MMI
    8 × 8-minute stations + 2 min reading time

A circuit of short, independent stations. You read a prompt, respond for a fixed time, then move to a new assessor and an unrelated scenario.

    When it happens

Interviews: November and December for NSW, ACT and Queensland applicants and all rural applicants. Interstate non-rural applicants attend a session in January.

    What is specific to Newcastle/JMP

    • Which round you are placed in depends on where you are applying from, so check your category before assuming a date.

How to prepare for a MMI interview

    • Your worst station matters more than your best. Assessors do not confer, and scores are aggregated across the circuit, so consistency beats brilliance.
    • Practise finishing slightly early rather than being cut off. An assessor can only score what they actually hear.
    • Drill the reset between stations. Carrying frustration from a bad station into the next one turns one weak score into three.
    • Structure beats content at this length. Signpost your answer — say how many points you will make, then make them.
